When it comes to evaluating headphones, it can be difficult to narrow down the top of the line because there's an innumerable variety of excellent options there. It's also impossible to go through every model available. However, I'll do my best.

The majority of us concentrate more on best true wireless earphones under 3000 and truly wireless specifically -- and yes the Apple AirPods are hugely popular in the past few years. But this list of top headphones includes headphones that are on-ear as well as over-ear models and even low-cost headphones that are marketed that are "budget" standouts for those who don't need to shell out hundreds of dollars to experience the ultimate audio quality and comfort.

They're our current picks to earn our current selection for "best headphones" designation (with waterproofing ratings for models that are in-ear). It's important to note that we're experiencing a variety of new models coming out including many that we highlighted in our top headsets in CES 2021 roundup. This list will be updated regularly when we try out the new models.

Top true wireless

Sony WF-1000XM4

David Carnoy/CNETThere are no perfect earbuds however but not everyone will be a fan and feel of Sony WF-1000XM4 or even be able to pay their cost. However, if you're in search of excellent-sounding earbuds that offer great noise cancellation, great phone-calling capabilities, and a long batteries, these earbuds are a must-have. $278 AT AMAZONPlaying: Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds review The big-time upgrade 9:49

The most authentic wireless sound.

Bowers & Wilkins PI7

David Carnoy/CNETAfter a long time, Bowers & Wilkins has finally launched a couple of sets of wireless earbuds that are truly wireless they are the P7 ($400) and the PI5 ($250) Both of which are top-quality and come with active noise cancellation as well as a transparent mode. The top model, the PI7 comes with a different driver design, and is more refined and detailed with a bit more bass. Both sound great however, if you're searching for the best sounding pair of earbuds, then the PI7 can be said to be better than the Sony WF-1000XM4 with a tiny difference.

(They are also a little better than the superb Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless II and the Master & Dynamic MW08.)Although the PI7's noise cancellation is decent but the Sony's noise cancellation is far superior. I also believed that the Sony was better at voice calls (it is more noise-reducing so that people can hear you better in more noisy environment) and has a longer battery life.

The PI7's case can transform into it's own Bluetooth transceiver. You can connect it to your laptop for streaming aptX or as an entertainment system for in-flight. It's a nice option (the PI5 don't have it) however, the Sony is by far the better price. If quality of sound is important to you you should consider the PI7 are worth looking into if you can afford the price. It is likely that they will decrease in cost over time. The PI5's earbuds also sound fantastic and are smaller as the PI7.

At just $250 the PI5 is directly in competition with that $280 Sony 1000XM4. Like all headphones in-ear it is important to test them out to see if they will fit in your ears. Bowers & Wilkins' buds could fit better than Sony's, and vice to the other. It is important to note that despite their price the PI7 buds are in stock with a variety of retailers.$400 AT AMAZON

Sony's best over-ear noise cancelling headphone

Sony WH-1000XM4

The earlier model from Sony's WH-1000XM3 was a great model. However, it did have a issue, it was voice calling, especially in louder situations. The WH-1000XM4 model has been improved in this regard and includes multipoint Bluetooth pairing that lets you connect two devicesfor example, your smartphone and your computersimultaneously.

This means that when a phone call is received when you're wearing headphones on computers, then the sound will change to your phone as you respond to the call. It's the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 may will have a slight edge in voice calls, however the 1000XM4 headphones are slightly more comfortable. They are also equipped with some minor improvements in noise cancellation and sound, making this model an excellent all-round option. Also, this model is regularly reduced.$348 AT AMAZON $348 AT WALMART $350 AT BEST BUY

It's impossible to beat

Apple AirPods Pro

Although they're not like the glistening sound you'd expect a model priced at $249 will however, they're still a great choice. Apple AirPods Pro are still a fantastic pair of wireless earphones, with noise cancellation. This is largely because of their outstanding design and fit, as well as their improved bass and efficient noise cancellation -- and they now are upgraded with spatial audio as well as a new virtual sound mode that allows you to watch shows and movies (only compatible with iPhones and iPads that run iOS 14.3 or higher).).

They're a good choice when you're looking to make a phone call or play music during your exercise. Yes, they're costly with a price of $250. But the great part is that they usually sell within the $200 to $220 to $220 range.

Fantastic noise-canceling earbuds.

Bose QuietComfort Earbuds

The Bose noise cancelling QuietComfort Earbuds are excellent true wireless earbuds, especially with regard to quality of sound and noise cancellation which is perhaps the top available right this moment in a set of earbuds. They certainly outperform Apple's most popular AirPods Pro true wireless noise cancelling earbuds.

But the AirPods Pro's more compact appearance, slightly more comfortable fit , and enhanced voice-calling capabilities make it difficult to call the Bose the ultimate winner (they both are splash-proof with IPX water resistance). In the end, it's all about the features you value most.
